Gov declares state of calamity due to ASF

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bataan passed a resolution on Monday declaring the whole province in state of calamity due to upsurge of African swine fever affecting 75 percent of hog raisers.

Bataan Gov. Jose Enrique Garcia III announced through his Facebook page on Tuesday that local residents need not worry about the safety of pork available in the local market because the Provincial Veterinary Office had been requiring meat traders to secure ASF test results and certification from the said office before meats are sold in the market.

So far, 333 pigs from backyard hog raisers were already tested positive for ASF virus. Seventeen out of 58 backyard hog raisers are affected by the virus. The province’s 11 towns and one city were under surveillance for possible ASF virus. The first ASF upsurge in Bataan and other Central Luzon provinces was detected in the first quarter of 2020 affecting the hog industry. The affected hog raisers may now avail of financial assistance from the provincial government the amount of which was not yet available.
